You must have heard by now that Nintendo is bringing its iconic Super Mario franchise to iPhones. Well, you Android users out there can breathe easy, for the game is also coming to Android devices “soon.”
How soon is a different question altogether, but the game is coming to Android, which is the more important point here. Nintendo apparently spoke to Kotaku and told them, “We do intend to release the game on Android devices at some point in the future.”
Mario is easily as iconic as Mickey Mouse and just about everyone I know has played a Mario game. Super Mario Bros is, arguably, the Mario game and the Super Mario Run that was demoed at Apple’s Keynote seemed to follow the same aesthetic.
While many have called the game an endless runner (like Temple Run, for example), Nintendo’s official description of the game doesn’t actually say that. They literally say, “In this game you constantly move forward through the courses while using a variety of jumps to navigate.”
There are three game modes on offer:
  • A set of “challenging courses” to complete.
  • A challenge mode where you challenge friends to beat your score on a course.
  • “Create your own Mushroom Kingdom using coins collected by playing the first two game modes.”
We’re not sure what that last is, but we’ll find out soon enough. The game has been listed on the U.S. App Storefor now, but it’s not yet available for download.
Either way, it’s important to note that Nintendo is only referring to “courses” when talking about the game. The video on the iTunes store also shows the Bowser battle from Super Mario Bros., where Mario dumps Bowser into a pit of lava. We might simply see the classic Super Mario levels remastered for the runner game format.
Nintendo insists that the game will be a “free download with a single purchase price” and that there will be no micro-transactions. The pricing has also not been revealed.
